The Path of an Empath

I’ve been an empath since before I even knew what the word meant. It was something instinctual, and a subtle energy others could sense. As a child, I was always the one my friends would turn to in times of trouble. I would even have adult family members or friends of family who would seem to find comfort in my presence whilst going through a hard time. Even if I didn’t fully understand what they were dealing with, I had an inner knowing to just be there for them, whether to listen, to take their mind off things with a whimsical game, or to say a few words that would come to me, which often led to them responding with statements like “you’re wise beyond your years”.

I never thought anything of it or even thought it was anything out of the ordinary; I just figured that’s just what you do and everyone was like this.

It wasn’t until my teen years that I began to learn that not only is everyone not like this, but some people are in fact the opposite. It’s a hard lesson that every empath will inevitably encounter on their journey through this life. There are individuals who carry darkness in their hearts, and they will sense your giving nature, trying to find ways to use it to their advantage. So we must learn to be discerning with our abilities. This can be difficult at first, as it is our nature to want to help, to heal, to uplift. But it is not our duty to give of ourselves where it will never be appreciated, or to those who would try to manipulate or cause harm. It can be a challenging hurdle to overcome, but once we do, a miraculous thing happens; our abilities become even stronger! We learn to recognise other beautiful souls and connect with them on a level that would never be possible (or wanted) with the miscreants of the world. We learn the differences between a beautiful soul we can give of ourselves freely to, a beautiful but troubled soul who we are meant to help, and an evil soul which we are meant to avoid.

We can then revel in the joy of sensing the emotions of those who come into our lives, understanding exactly what they need emotionally, and being like a portal that can absorb and transmute their troubling emotions. Most of us will also be drawn to other forms of the healing arts like Healing Touch, Reiki, and many other therapeutic practices, and we can use these modalities to assist in being a transformative and uplifting and/or calming presence in the lives of those the Universe sends to us.

Many of us have come to this existence with different gifts we are meant to share with others. Being an empath is a quiet superpower; an ability to feel the unspoken and offer comfort where words fall short. There’s profound beauty in carrying the emotions of others, not as a burden, but as a bridge to deeper human connection.
